Today, we hear from our Associate Client Specialist, Alison Breiner, about how she sets up her day and what is most important to her in those early hours. More to come from the rest of the team!
What is your morning routine?
My morning routine is honestly pretty short. I love my sleep, so I sleep until the last possible minute until I have to get ready for my day! My day usually begins with my alarm going off at 5 a.m. After hitting the snooze button several times (Remember, I love my sleep!), I am out of bed around 5:30 a.m. As soon as I get out of bed, I do a few stretches to loosen up my joints, and then I hit the shower. Sometimes, a shower is the only thing that can really wake me up! After my shower, I finish getting myself ready for work - outfit, hair, makeup, etc. Next, I get my work bag ready with computer, workout clothes and my lunch for the day. Lastly, I’ll eat a gluten-free bagel and a piece of fruit as I’m walking out the door. Also, before I leave for work, I always have to give my husband a kiss and say I love you, even if he is still sleeping! Then, I usually leave my house with enough time to catch the 7 a.m. train to downtown Chicago. During my train ride, I usually check my emails and give my parents a call to say hello! I live about 5 hours away from my family. So, we always like to check in, say I love you, and say have a great day! After my train ride, I have about a 15 minute walk to our offices, and I am in the office around 8:15 a.m.
How long have you stuck with this routine so far?
Well, this has only been my routine for about three months. That is when I started working for 12five Capital, and I’m loving every minute!
How has your morning routine changed over recent years?
I definitely get up earlier when I used to! I also used to do my workout in the morning, but now I usually workout over my lunch break or after work.
What time do you go to sleep?
Like I said above, I love my sleep! Both myself and my husband swear by a good night’s sleep, and we try to get 7 to 9 hours every night. I really think good sleep keeps me healthy, calm, and focused during the day. So, I’m usually in bed around 9:30 p.m.
Do you use an alarm to wake you up in the morning, and if so do you ever hit the snooze button?
I use the alarm on my iPhone, and yes, I hit the snooze numerous times most mornings. However, on weekends, no alarm for me!
How soon after waking up do you have breakfast, and what do you typically have?
I usually eat around an hour after I wake up. As stated above, it’s a gluten free bagel and fruit while I’m walking out the door.
Do you have a morning workout routine?
No, I usually workout over my lunch break. Also, after work, I usually walk or ride my bike if it is nice outside.
How about morning meditation?
I do not mediate, but I do thank God every morning for all the blessings I have in my life!
Do you answer email first thing in the morning, or leave it until later in the day?
I usually start checking my email when I get on the train.
Do you use any apps or products to enhance your sleep or morning routine?
I use a Fitbit to track my sleep. The app lets me know how long I slept and how many awake/restless minutes I had throughout the night.
How soon do you check your phone in the morning?
I have my phone on silent during the night. So, I usually check my phone first thing when I wake up just for text messages and to look at the day’s weather.
What are your most important tasks in the morning?
The most important thing I do all morning is give my husband a kiss and say I love you. He may be sleeping, but it is an important thing for me to do. I also call my parents every morning. It may just be a quick hello, I love you, and have a great day, but it means the world to them and me. You never know what will happen in life, so I always want the people I love to know how I feel each and every day!
What and when is your first drink in the morning?
I usually drink a cup of water before I shower and some orange juice with breakfast.
Do you also follow this routine on weekends, or do you change some steps?
The weekends mean no alarms and a big breakfast! If he can, my husband and I like to sleep until our bodies wake us up. Then, we turn up some music and make a big breakfast together. He usually makes scrambled eggs and peppers, while I make the gluten free toast and turkey bacon!
On days you’re not settled in your home, are you able to adapt your routine to fit in with a different environment?
I don’t really travel for work, but when I’m not going to office, my routine is relatively the same minus the train ride.
What do you do if you fail to follow your morning routine, and how does this influence the rest of your day?
My morning routine is so short, I can usually get everything in. However, if I don’t get good sleep the night before, I feel like my whole day is off. Good sleep helps me stay motivated throughout the day!
